Benson’s purchased water sources - water from the City of Dunn and Johnston County West - will be changing their water disinfectant from a chlorine and ammonia mixture to free chlorine beginning March 1 and ending April 2.
The change will impact all Town of Benson water customers.
Most customers will not notice a difference in their water, but some may detect a chlorine smell or observe a slight color change. The water will remain safe for consumption during this period.
The disinfectant will return to a chlorine and ammonia mixture on April 3.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
For questions or concerns, customers may contact Public Works Director Tim Robbins at (919) 894-3553.
This process is not toxic to animals - it's the same disinfectant that is used in several other water systems. The switch we are notifying residents of here is conducted once a year to clean out the system. However, higher chlorine content could be toxic to tropical fish, so any tropical fish owners should take note of that during this timeframe March 1 - April 2.
