WATER DISINFECTANT NOTICE

Beginning March 1, 2023 the Town of Benson’s drinking water system will be temporarily undergoing a change of water disinfection from chloramines (chlorine and ammonia) to chlorine only.
The Public Water Supply Section of the NC Department of Environmental Quality recommends this change on an annual basis. The change will impact all customers that pay a water bill to the Town of Benson.
Town staff will be flushing fire hydrants during this time to help distribute the chlorine disinfectant throughout the water distribution system. Flushing may cause temporary water discoloration, pressure fluctuations or the smell of chlorine in the water. The water supply will remain safe for consumption during this time.
Water customers are reminded that residual traces of ammonia and chlorine must be removed from water prior to its use in kidney dialysis equipment. Chlorine and ammonia are also harmful to fish aquariums.
The chloramine disinfection process (chlorine and ammonia) will resume on April 3, 2023.
For questions or concerns regarding the disinfection change please contact the Public Works Superintendent Jeremy Bryant or Water System Manager Ray Adams by calling Town Hall at 919-894-3553.
