Beginning March 1, 2024 the Town of Benson’s drinking water supply will be temporarily undergoing a change of water disinfectant from chloramines (chlorine and ammonia) to free chlorine.
Chloramine disinfection will resume April 1, 2024 for customers on or adjacent to Chicopee Road, and April 12, 2024 for all other customers.
The State of North Carolina, Public Water Supply Section recommends this change on an annual basis. The change affects all customers that pay a water bill to the Town of Benson.
Town staff will be flushing water lines during this time for maintenance of the water distribution system. The flushing process may cause temporary water discoloration, pressure fluctuations or smell of chlorine in the water. The water supply will remain safe for consumption during this time.
Customers are reminded that residual traces of ammonia and chlorine must be removed from water prior to its use in kidney dialysis equipment. Chlorine and ammonia are also harmful to fish aquariums.
For questions or concerns regarding the disinfection change please contact Town Hall at 919-894-3553.
